In 2013 we brought this journey to Saint Paul’s Lowertown—home to a vibrant arts community including the newly arrived Bedlam Theater, veteran meeting spot Black Dog Cafe, Minnesota Museum of American Art’s new project space, the ever-present Mississippi River, the magnificently restored Union Depot station, and many other sites. From Union Depot and the rest of Lowertown, many journeys took place—by train, by bus, across time and space, in our imagination, and through the creativity of a multitude of artists who took us along for a ride specially constructed for Northern Spark: an experience that is all arts, all people, all night.
Northern Spark 2013 took place from sunset June 8, 2013 until sunrise June 9, 2013. 45,000 people attended. More than 300 artists presented 79 projects in 9 venues, in collaboration with 42 arts and cultural organizations. Union Depot in Lowertown was a major hub for the festival and housed many of the night’s projects.
