Same festival, new title

The spirit of Northern Spark 2017 lies in the idea of collective action; of everyday tasks, intentions, big and small movements we can do together to make the change we need to see for a healthier environment. When we launched this theme in 2016, we conceptualized a movement from chaos to rising, in part to mirror the rising of temperatures and sea levels but also the necessity of action – of people rising. Inspired by the response of all of our presenting partners and festival artists, and to more accurately tell this story, we’re shifting the festival’s title this year to Climate Chaos | People Rising. Join us on June 10th — or before — to get involved and rise together!

Global climate change causes dramatic effects on the migration of living things — plant, animal, and insect alike. The effect on many human communities can be hugely destructive. Extreme weather events such as floods and years-long droughts become intertwined with political instability, resulting in the forced mass movement people away from their homelands.

At this edition of the Anthropocene Awareness Association we hear from Northern Spark artists whose projects address the connections between climate and refugees through performative installations. They are joined in conversation by a local foreign policy affairs consultant who will provide contextual data on climate-based mass migrations globally.

This April, join us for our 7th installment of the Anthropocene Awareness Association series, featuring Robin Wall Kimmerer.

Ralph Rapson Hall Auditorium, 89 Church Street SE, Minneapolis, MN 55455
Free, but reservations required on EventBrite.
Presented in partnership with Milkweed Editions and Institute of Advanced Study at the University of Minnesota.

Mother, scientist, decorated professor, and enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, Robin Wall Kimmerer brings an acute care to her reflections on our relationships with the natural world. Writing in prose that breezes easily across scientific thinking, cultural history and indigenous ways-of-knowing, she forwards the belief that all kinds of life hold intelligence. Through stories about plants ranging from moss to strawberries to pecan trees, she demonstrates how humans can learn to listen better to what the natural world communicates. This kind of phenological attention, she urges, is necessary to repair inequitable relationships between human life and the rest of the earth.

Wall Kimmerer is the author of Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teaching of Plants, published by Milkweed Editions and Gathering Moss: A Natural and Cultural History of Mosses, which was awarded the John Burroughs Medal for outstanding natural writing. She lives in Fabius, New York where she is SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of Environmental Biology, and the founder and director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment.

AAA: Anthropocene Awareness Association is a sometimes club, sometimes support group, always happy hour to discuss issues related to the core ideas of the Northern Spark festival’s year-long theme: Climate Chaos | Climate Rising.

Northern Spark 2017 is all about Neighborhoods!

Past Northern Spark audiences have wandered the late-night galleries of beloved institutions like the Walker Art Center, Mia, and MCAD—but Northern Spark 2017 is all about exploring the creativity and culture of public spaces in neighborhoods along the Metro Transit Green Line. Northern Spark will still be happening downtown (both of them!) but you’ll find equal excitement of this year’s festival in these neighborhoods:

Cedar Riverside Neighborhood (West Bank)
The #WestBank light-rail stop serves the Cedar Riverside or West Bank Neighborhood. The West Bank is a diverse community on the edge of downtown Minneapolis that’s home to many Muslim residents and students from the neighborhood’s various schools, colleges and universities. Bordered by the Mississippi River, I-94, and I-35W and with access to both the METRO Green and Blue Line light-rail, the district features bars, theaters, restaurants, parks, residential buildings, community centers and a variety of nonprofits. The West Bank Business Association (WBBA) is Northern Spark’s neighborhood partner, with participation from other organizations.

Little Africa District (Snelling Ave)
Snelling Avenue is the stop for the Little Africa Business and Cultural District of Minnesota (#LittleAfricaMN), a corridor that extends north from University and Snelling to Minnehaha Avenue. Little Africa includes a variety of African-owned businesses such as groceries, restaurants, cafes and more. The district celebrates African cultures through public arts events, murals, and the annual summertime Little Africa festival (on August 19th in 2017). There are additional Little Africa businesses in the surrounding parts of Saint Paul, and two more nodes as well (Minneapolis and Brooklyn Park/Brooklyn Center). Northern Spark’s neighborhood partner is African Economic Development Solutions (AEDS), with participation from other organizations. Art projects in this festival zone will touch on themes including the experience of African immigrants and people of African heritage through dance, film and interactive projects.

Rondo Neighborhood (Lexington Pkwy)
The historic #Rondo Neighborhood, served in part by the Lexington Avenue light-rail stop, is part of the Summit/University area of Saint Paul. Home to a large and thriving African-American community of homeowners, business leaders, and culture-makers that centered around Rondo Avenue in the 1930s, the neighborhood was largely destroyed by construction of I-94 in the 1960s. Today the spirit of Rondo is carried forward through the Rondo Arts, Cultural, & Business Heritage District (RACBHD), Roots of Rondo Black Artists Rising and Black Excellence programs, Rondo Days and Selby Jazz Festival celebrations, the Rondo Commemorative Plaza opening in July 2017, and the creation of the first Saint Paul African American Historical Cultural Context Study.

Northern Spark art projects in Rondo will engage the rich history of Black creativity in the neighborhood and make connections to climate justice through a variety of art forms. Northern Spark’s neighborhood partner is the Aurora St. Anthony Neighborhood Community Development Corporation, with participation from the High School for Recording Arts.

Little Mekong District (Western Ave)
#LittleMekong
is the Asian business and cultural district in Saint Paul served by the Western Avenue light-rail stop. Located between Mackubin and Galtier streets along University Avenue, the district boasts a diversity of cultures, top-rated restaurants and unique shopping experiences. The neighborhoods around Little Mekong include Frogtown and Summit-University. Visitors come to Little Mekong to experience the unique culture and flavors of Southeast Asia. Northern Spark’s neighborhood partner is Asian Economic Development Association (AEDA), known for the Little Mekong Night Market, an annual event that will take place on the same night as Northern Spark this year.

The Little Mekong Night Market is the first and only Southeast Asian Night Market in the Twin Cities featuring local food, art and performances that run until midnight. Check out the festival in this video: Little Mekong Night Market 2015.

This year, the Little Mekong Night Market has a thematic focus on water, and Northern Spark projects will carry this theme. Water is seen as a connector, connecting multiple Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Water is sacred to many of these cultures, but can also remind other Southeast Asian communities of struggle and war.

Weisman Art Museum (East Bank)
Activities on the East Bank include programming by various U of M institutions, including #WeismanArtMuseum, the Raptor Center and a Grand Challenges curriculum class. Neighboring organizations the Textile Center and the Weavers Guild of Minnesota will also present projects in this festival zone.

The Commons (US Bank Stadium)
In downtown Minneapolis, Northern Spark moves from The Mill District and the Minneapolis Convention Center to #TheCommons, a new downtown gathering location on the green space at Portland and 5th, near the Armory. MINN_LAB’s winning Creative City Challenge project, Orbacles, will be installed at The Commons and debut at Northern Spark 2017.

Lowertown (Union Depot)
Northern Spark returns to Union Depot and public spaces throughout #Lowertown, Saint Paul’s downtown neighborhood and historic home of the arts. Formerly Minnesota’s largest shipping and manufacturing district, Lowertown is a vibrant neighborhood that lies on the downtown edge of Saint Paul, within footsteps of the Mississippi River. Its numerous landmark sites include the Saint Paul Farmer’s Market, CHS Field and Union Depot. Aesthetically, it’s notable for its warehouse architecture, which evokes the neighborhood’s long & storied urban history. Lowertown is situated on Indigenous Dakota land. The night of the festival, we will animate public spaces within a 1 block radius of the Union Depot light-rail station, including the front lawn of the Depot itself. Partner venues in Lowertown include TPT, The M, Studio Z, and more.

What are the members of our Program Council excited for?

Our Program Council, made up of artists from our core neighborhoods (Little Mekong, Little Africa, Cedar Riverside, and Rondo), is extremely excited for the upcoming festival. Adan Dirie mentions, “I am looking forward to seeing how the idea of ‘Home’ and climate chaos intersect considering Ifrah [Mansour] and a few other artists’ pieces.” Aki Shibata, who will also be an artist in Little Mekong says that she is “looking forward to seeing the power of art to make us rethink about our Mother Earth.” Northern Spark and the Program Council worked together to select the pieces of art for each of the core neighborhoods. As mentioned by Filsan Ibrahim, “I can’t wait to see the community of art we have helped to create.”

Free, but registration required on Eventbrite.

Just a few spots left for the Solar Artists Workshop happening at the Soap Factory on March 26th!

Can your art project be solar powered?

Solar power can give you greater mobility within urban and rural landscapes, providing you with the facility to explore new aesthetic spaces for Placemaking, temporary or mobile installations, and community outreach. A solar powered art project not only reduces your carbon footprint, it encourages dialog about art, energy consumption, and Climate Change within the community.

In this hands-on workshop you will:

– Learn how to read a multimeter

– Experience the variables of solar power by going on a solar scavenger hunt

– Power small electronics with photovoltaics

– Learn how to calculate loads using Ohm’s law

The Solar Artists Workshop is FREE. Supported by a grant from the Institute on the Environment, the workshop will focus on photovoltaics (solar panels), with brief examples of other forms such as solar thermal, solar cooking, and passive solar. All disciplines, age 18+, all experience levels, welcomed and encouraged. Lunch will be provided. Register here.

Communicating About Climate Change

Festival Projects Manager Ady Olson and Co-Director Sarah Peters just returned from three days in the north woods where they attended the Institute for Non-formal Climate Change Education. Convened by Northern Spark partner Climate Generation, this gathering brought together people who work in wide-ranging fields from zoos to nature centers, to build their skills in talking with the public about climate change. They learned how to describe the carbon cycle in 60 seconds or less and learned communications models for connecting the fundamentals of global warming to non-science issues. And like any good retreat, each long day of workshops included a bit of time to walk in the woods. Thanks to Climate Gen for a thorough and inspiring get-away!

Andrea Carlson Water Is Life Metro Transit train wrap

To kick off Northern Spark 2017, Northern Lights.mn and Metro Transit have partnered to commission a spectacular full-color train wrap created by artist Andrea Carlson, which will run through June 10. Carlson has taken as her theme a water panther on one side with the Dakota words Mni Wiconi (water is life). On the other side of the train is a thunderbird with the words Nibi gaa-bimaaji’iwemagak (water gives life) in Ojibwe.

In an urban context, paved streets are like tributaries feeding rain and runoff into nearby rivers of the watershed. According to Northern Spark Co-Director Steve Dietz, “Carlson’s design is both a memorial to the power of water and a plea to honor it in all our uses, especially as human activities lead to increased risk of droughts, severe weather events, melting ice caps, sea level rise, and ocean acidification as just some of the water-related effects of climate change.”

Carlson says of her design,”we have the tools to make sure that Dakota and Ojibwe don’t disappear… because that tool is our minds. Anyone can learn it, so we can save these languages. And I feel like the planet is in the same situation. We have the tools to make sure this doesn’t happen.”

Carlson is an internationally recognized painter and media artist who lives and works in Chicago, IL and Saint Paul, MN. Her Anishinaabe (Ojibwe), French and Scandinavian heritage provides a rich foundation for her investigations of cultural consumption, history and identity, and the intrinsic power of storytelling. Her work is in prominent collections including those of the Weisman Art Museum, the British Museum, and the National Gallery of Canada.

The train is a reflection not only of Northern Spark’s connection to the transitway but of Metro Transit’s commitment to sustainability.

The Green Line construction project included several stormwater management features that help prevent runoff from entering the nearby Mississippi River, including tree trenches and rain gardens. The Green Line’s Operations and Maintenance Facility in Lowertown also has a stormwater capture system that helps provide water for irrigation and restrooms at CHS Field.

“This partnership is a great opportunity to not only bring our community together but also to highlight our organization’s strong commitment to sustainability in all its forms,” General Manager Brian Lamb said.

Metro Transit is among just a few transit agencies to earn Gold Level certification through the American Public Transit Association’s Sustainability Program.

You can read more about Andrea Carlson’s train wrap design in her interview with NL’s Assistant Curator, Elle Thoni.

Free passes will be available to download for travel on Metro Transit the night of Northern Spark.

Northern Spark Program Council

This year we’re excited to introduce the first Northern Spark Program Council, a leadership group of artists working with Northern Lights.mn and our Neighborhood Partners to inspire participation from artists and residents in cultural communities along the Green Line. In 2017 the Program Council is organizing artists in Little Mekong, Little Africa, Rondo, and on the West Bank to present projects at Northern Spark that respond to climate change from culturally diverse perspectives. We thank them for their insight and participation: Adan Dirie, Sara Endalew, Graci Horne, Filsan Ibrahim, Pa Na Lor, Brittany Lynch, Sagirah Shahid, Aki Shibata-Pliner and Ahmed Yusuf.

Northern Spark Neighborhood Partners

Our overall partner in bringing Northern Spark 2017 to the Green Line is Twin Cities LISC(Local Initiatives Support Corporation), an umbrella organization supporting neighborhood cultural and economic development organizations in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Twin Cities LISC’s work “brings together key players to address community challenges.” They worked with us to develop the original vision for Northern Spark on the Green Line, an area where they have served as an important force for the health and benefit of small businesses and communities throughout the Green Line Transit Corridor construction project.

African Economic Development Solutions’ (AEDS) mission is to generate wealth within marginalized communities and communities of Black heritage in the Twin Cities and Greater Minnesota. Access to key resources, supportive institutional frameworks, and nourishing environments are all necessary elements for creating financial success within marginalized communities. Based in AEDS confronts economic disparities in the communities they serve by providing customized financial literacy training, micro-entrepreneurship training, and by providing homeownership education. Little Africa is an initiative of AEDS in partnership with the Little Africa Development Group, focusing on African immigrant economic assets in three nodal points around primary transit corridors– in St. Paul the district’s core is at Snelling and University. The mission of Little Africa is to leverage the rich and diverse businesses, art, and cultural assets of Minnesota’s growing African immigrant populations to build sustainable wealth within the African immigrant communities.

Asian Economic Development Association (AEDA) was created to expand opportunities for economic success for low-income Asian Americans in the Twin Cities. AEDA’s programs help lift people out of poverty and achieve economic stability through small business development, financial education, arts and culture programs, and social justice advocacy. An initiative AEDA, Little Mekong is the Asian business and cultural district in St. Paul between Mackubin and Galtier streets along University Avenue. The district’s name derives from the Mekong River, which flows from China through Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, and connects the cultures of Southeast Asia.

Aurora St. Anthony Neighborhood Development Corporation (ASANDC) is based in St. Paul’s historic Rondo neighborhood, and with Neighborhood Development Corporation launched the Rondo Arts Cultural Business District in 2013. Today ASANDC hosts a variety of social, economic, housing, and commercial development programs for Aurora St. Anthony, Frogtown and Summit-University residents of all ages, with a mission to foster positive relationships within and between the neighborhoods we serve and to support our members in affecting the quality of life in their communities.

The West Bank Businesses Association (WBBA) exists to engage the business community in the responsible economic development of the West Bank district while preserving the unique character and heritage of the Cedar Riverside neighborhood in MInneapolis. WBBA is dedicated to preserving the neighborhood’s strengths while identifying and helping address the neighborhood’s changing needs, bringing positive improvements to all while serving as a resource for all of the business and commercial property owners on the West Bank.

Climate Rising Collaboration Partners

The Climate Rising Collaboration, made possible with the support of the McKnight Foundation, pairs artists with organizations working directly on issues concerning energy, environmental justice and climate change.

Climate Rising Collaborations partners include Climate Generation, MN350, Neighborhoods Organizing for Change (NOC), Take Action, Minnesota Center for Energy and Environment (CEE), and Conservation MN. In each collaboration, artists work with partner staff and volunteers to creatively connect their artistic practice and interests to the organization’s focus areas. Partners contribute resources and expertise to help each project reach its zenith at Northern Spark 2017.

We at Northern Lights.mn believe that in order to develop realistic and hopeful maps for the future in the face of real and growing climate chaos, artists, scientists, policymakers and activists will need to collaborate. These projects are incubators for what we hope will be more collaborations to come.

Northern Lights.mn Newsletter – February

Water Is Life

Andrea Carlson, design for “Water Is Life” Metro Transit train wrap

It’s a simple fact. Without water, we would not be able to live. Water is life.
We are thrilled to announce that for Northern Spark 2017 (June 10), Andrea Carlson is designing a special “train wrap” for a Metro Transit light-rail car, which will be running along the Green Line beginning in March.

Carlson’s design is both a memorial to the power of water and a plea to honor it in all our uses, especially as human activities lead to increased risk of droughts, severe weather events, melting ice caps, sea level rise, and ocean acidification as just some of the water-related effects of climate change.

Special thanks to Metro Transit who helped support Carlson’s work and will be providing free passes the night of Northern Spark. Look for this train car coming soon to a Green Line station near you. We will be announcing the full artist line up for Northern Spark when the train wrap launches toward the end of the month.

AAA Returns!

Mizna cover art by Monira Al Qadiri. Detail from “Alien Technology,” 2014.

After a brief new year hiatus, AAA: Anthropocene Awareness Association is back! Join us at these upcoming programs to sharpen your knowledge of the nuanced effects of climate change across the globe.

This month, long-time Northern Lights.mn partner Mizna will release the winter edition of their critically acclaimed journal of writing and visual art by Arabs and Arab Americans. The focus of this issue is the environment — a topic less commonly associated with the Arab world.  This is a subject Mizna began exploring through their projection project Confluent for Northern Spark in 2014. As Executive Director Lana Barkawi and Program Manager Moheb Soliman wrote that year: “Confluent, seeks to immerse Northern Spark audiences in communal, environmental, and other commonalities—confluences—between here and there [Iraq].” Read the full text here.

Fast forward three years and their full volume of visual and literary work takes on the theme of the nature and the environment in the Arab world and it’s intersections in Arab America.  At this joint journal release and AAA, dig into these issues with guest editor Gary Paul Nabhan, the internationally-celebrated nature writer, agrarian activist, and ethnobiologist, and local contributors Tami Mohamad Brown and Dawud MullaMoheb Soliman, and Canadian Arab writer and thinker Joe Kadi. Video work by Monira Al Qadiri will also be on display.

MINN_LAB wins the 2017 Creative City Challenge

We are pleased to announce that MINN_LAB has been selected as the winner of the 2017 Creative City Challenge with their piece OrbaclesOrbacles is a triad of spherical structural environments that connect to tell a story of climate change by focusing on birds of Minnesota and the language of our senses. The orbs communicate the recorded and anticipated shift of birds from 2017-2080 due to species loss and species migration related to climate effects, and the interconnected transformation of terrestrial and aquatic environments.

Orbacles will be installed on The Commons across from U.S. Bank Stadium and will be unveiled at Northern Spark on June 10, 2017. It will remain up through the end of July.

You may remember MINN_LAB’s work from their past Northern Spark projects: Weather Report in 2016, CityScope in 2015, and POSTography in 2014.

Warming the Winter with Public Art at B-Lectric and Nicollet Mall

Words for Winter, poetry by 17 local writers, photo by Max Haynes

Northern Lights.mn braved the late-January chill to celebrate the winter season with public art projects at the B-Lectric festival and along Nicollet Mall.

B-Lectric, a celebration of art and light with partner Barbette, was a festive evening along Lake and Irving in Uptown on January 29th. Guests stayed warm by sipping warm beverages around barrel fires while viewing Northern Lights’ artist projections on urban surfaces and three custom-built ice walls. Colorful whimsical projections by Marina Zurkow and Miko Simmons were juxtaposed with Joshua McGarvey’s sensory Ice Fall – Feel the Change and Graci Horne’s curated collections of images from the ongoing resistance to pipeline development at Standing Rock, ND. Lively contributions from Art Shanty Projects and Inflammati Fire Circus rounded out a fun-evening of outdoor celebration.

The same weekend, Northern Lights.mn kicked off its collaboration with The Great Northern festival, debuting Piotr Szyhalski’s sweeping seven block long installation of Living Banners which transformed Nicollet Mall from a construction zone into a monument of poetic phrases.

Its accompanying project, Words for Winter, caused passersby to do a double-take at 4 road construction signs scrolling with poetry from 17 local writers in homage to winter. Both reverent and playful, this project caused quite a buzz with downtown dwellers snapping photos and sharing readily on social media. Words for Winter poets included: Brave Crow, Heid E. Erdrich, Sarah Fox, Hassan Hussein, Sarah Myers, Miss Brit, Moheb Soliman, Lara Mimosa Montes, LianiRey, Lula Saleh, Sagirah Shahid, Sun Yung Shin, Mary Austin Speaker, Elle Thoni, Joel Turnipseed, Elisabeth Workman, and Ahmed Ismail Yusuf.

The week of public art projects on Nicollet Mall opened on January 30th with a sound and light show by Tesla Works, to a soundtrack by the Minnesota Orchestra.

Want to read more about the artistic process? Click here to read a conversation between Northern Lights.mn Artistic Director, Steve Dietz and Living Banners artist Piotr Szyhalski. An excerpt from the conversation below:

“Something magical happens as we bring two words together, and Living Banners thrives in that energy…At this scale, in this particular environment, the language, the words, and all the ideas they imply, begin to feel more like a place than a story. A point of convergence where our own interpretations and thoughts connect and weave a large complicated narrative unfolding in multiple directions simultaneously.”
– Piotr Szyhalski

Thank you to all of our artists, partners, sponsors and attendees for making both these inaugural winter events a success! These projects could not have happened without the generous support of the Minneapolis Foundation, Minneapolis Downtown Council, DID Minneapolis and Barbette.

Climate Change in Your Neighborhood

Marina Zurkow, Cranes awaiting assignments. View from the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, Queens, New York, 2016

“North Brooklyn and SE Queens are in the midst of a seemingly endless building boom. The proximity to Manhattan, the preponderance of small lots, eager developers, old-time residents willing to sell, and new clients willing to pay high rental and condo prices, as well as the lifting of some zoning restrictions, are contributing to a maxed-out  neighborhood in which the rate of transience is high, and therefore environmental citizenship is low.”

Northern Lights.mn Newsletter – January

B-Lectric

Northern Lights.mn sees winter as a defining key to our cultural imagination, one that must be cherished even as its existence is threatened by global climate change. That’s why we’re teaming up with Uptown’s French bistro, Barbette, to host B-Lectric, a winter celebration of art and light this January.

During this one-day winter street festival, Northern Lights.mn will construct custom ice walls that, at sunset, will become projection screens for a variety of light-based projects. Highlights include Joshua McGarvey’s Ice Fall-Feel the Change, a favorite of Northern Spark 2016, which allows audiences to feel glaciers calving as they lean back into sound beds. A documentary compilation by local curator Graci Horne showcasing new footage from the ongoing pipeline resistance at Standing Rock, North Dakota will be joined by short films from Wapikoni, a mobile recording studio that travels to First Nation communities in Canada.

In addition, Art Shanty Projects will transform surfaces into creative community spaces that are part art gallery and part social experiment. To round out the afternoon, there will be DJ sets, performances, and mini obstacle courses, along with delicious food and warm cocktails. B-Lectric is a proud part of the Great Northern festival.

Date: Sunday, January 29th

Time: 4:30 – 9pm (projections light up at 5:30pm)

Location: Outside at Barbette, 1600 W Lake Street Minneapolis, MN

Cost: Free (food and beverage available for purchase)

Finalists selected for Creative City Challenge 2017

Three teams have been selected as finalists for the 2017 Creative City Challenge. This year artists were asked to propose projects following the theme of Climate Chaos | Climate Rising. Later this month these teams will present their full proposals to a jury, which will select the winner to install their project on The Commons and to be unveiled at Northern Spark on June 10, 2017.

Christine Baeumler with Backyard Phenology Team and the Illuminated Reef Collective / BareBones Productions, Multi-Species Menagerie: An Urban Adventure in the Anthropocene

Christine Baeumler with Backyard Phenology Team and the Illuminated Reef Collective / BareBones Productions proposes the Multi-Species Menagerie, an exploration of the presence and absence of species in the urban environment of the Anthropocene. The project includes a phenology trail that provides opportunities for people to observe species in the urban core, and makes visible the species that have or could disappear from Minnesota while symbolically welcoming back species through participatory performance, storytelling, and dance.

MINN_LAB, Orbacles

MINN_LAB’s Orbacles, is a triad of anthropomorphic spheres that interact with visitors around climate change through the language of our senses. The orbs change the space around them through light, sound and projection in response to natural and human inputs, spurring recognition, contemplation, familiarity, questioning, conversation, and response.

Wil Natzel, Thinning Arctic Ice Pavilion

Wil Natzel’s Thinning Arctic Ice Pavilion is inspired by the effect of climate changes on the arctic ice sheet. This spectacular and immersive architecture pavilion provides visitors with an experience that will inspire them to perceive and contemplate the thinning Arctic ice caused by rising temperatures.

Support Northern Spark

“Northern Spark this year provoked more reflecting and connecting than it has in past years for me. I also think that there is significant potential for art to powerfully impact the way that people feel about climate change, and that this year’s Northern Spark was a powerful example of that.” –Northern Spark 2016 attendee

As you consider your year-end giving, help us meet our goals for Northern Spark in 2017, either through a donation or through advance purchase of tickets to the Northern Spark Launch Party.

This year with our partners at West Bank Business Association, African Economic Development Solutions, Asian Economic Development Association, and Aurora St. Anthony Neighborhood Development Corporation, we will be bringing Northern Spark – and you – to the West Bank, Little Africa, Little Mekong, and Rondo neighborhoods along the Green Line, as well as The Commons in Minneapolis, Lowertown Saint Paul, and the Weisman Art Museum. An epic journey awaits, with more than 75 artist projects exploring the effects of climate change and what we can do about them.

We have secured generous support from The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Bush Foundation, the Carolyn Foundation, the Minnesota State Arts Board, the Cultural STAR Program, the City of Minneapolis, and from our sponsors, but we are counting on individual support to raise an additional $25,000 and sell 400 tickets to the Launch Party Fundraiser.

AAA Takes Off!

Kathy Jetnil Kijiner, Ahmed Yusuf, Brittany Lynch and Tom LeBlanc AAA: Words for a Warming Planet. Photo: Climate Generation

Our third installment of the Anthropocene Awareness AssociationEmergent Ecologies, was characterized by cold beer and warm conversations. Our featured speaker, Eben Kirksey, took his audience on an anecdotal journey to resilient communities in the Costa Rican rainforest, where he conducted his anthropological research in emergent ecologies. Instead of leaning into the doomsday narrative of climate change, Kirksey pointed to a hopeful future where opportunistic plant, animal and human networks will flourish symbiotically. The timing of his talk made the message all the more uplifting to hear.

On November 29 we gathered again to listen to Words for a Warming Planet, a poetry reading and discussion with four poets speaking to issues of care for the earth and all its inhabitants. Ahmed Yusuf, Brittany Lynch and Thomas LaBlanc recited works both personal and historic about their cultural connections to climate, nature, humanity and the sacred. Marshall Islands-based poet Kathy Jetnil – Kijiner followed with two powerful pieces and talked about her own pathway to climate awareness that began –and continues– with a fight for her homeland to stay above water.  Brittany Lynch moderated an inspiring conversation with the poets and attendees.

A huge thanks to our partner Climate Generation for bringing Kathy to town and to All My Relations Gallery for hosting. All AAA memberships sold on Nov 29 are being donated to the water protectors at Standing Rock.

We’re working to nail down the details of the next AAA coming your way in early 2017. Stay tuned.

Climate Change in Your Neighborhood

Ash Adams, from Kivalina series

“These images are from a long-term project I’m working on in the village of Kivalina, Alaska, the place where my father-in-law grew up and one of the villages in the Arctic experiencing the harshest consequences of climate change. I decided to start working in this village because of what I haven’t seen covered well on villages like Kivalina–the slow, rich, beauty of this kind of pastoral life. The slow, quiet, non-sensationalist violence of climate change. The postcolonial sheen over beautiful places like this that indicate that this is not the first time their culture has needed to make decisions to survive a powerful force.

Lucy Adams, 83, moved to Kivalina in 1943 from Point Lay. Her family was one of the prominent whaling families in the village. ‘People in Kivalina can’t go out whaling like they used to,’ Adams says. ‘It’s too dangerous.’” – Ash Adams
