Northern Spark Open Call: Opening Event

Summary: Opening Event

This is an open call for a one-night Opening Event for Northern Spark 2018.  Northern Spark has had many different opening events over the years, from a Car Horn Fanfare to a Psychedelic Art Parade to a few straight ahead concerts. For the 2018 festival, we are asking you to propose an opening event that will take place in or around the Commons.

More information about Northern Spark 2018 and the theme of commonality is here.

Submission link is here.

This call is for individual artists, artist collectives or artist-led teams, not organizations or companies. Artists living anywhere are eligible to participate, but there is no additional funding available for shipping or travel.

Site Parameters and Opportunities:

  • The opening event will start at 9:00 pm on Friday, June 15, 2018, only.
  • The opening event should last at least 20 minutes and no more than 45 minutes. *Please note that there is no amplified sound allowed after 10 pm.
  • The opening event needs to relate to the theme of commonality.
  • It needs to work “around” any installed works in the Commons and any staged elements need to be able to be taken down quickly after the opening event ends.

The budget is $2,500. There is no additional budget for a large stage or powerful amplification system. Thus, we are not looking for a traditional concert.
