Sorry I couldn’t be in Miami, I was there in 2007
“‘Sorry I Couldn’t Be There‘ is a crowd-created video series. Developed by members of @Platea, the social media art collective directed by An Xiao, the series features artists from around the world explaining briefly why they couldn’t attend #rank and swing by Miami. Ultimately, the video would highlight concerns around geographic access and about who’s left out during large art fairs. For too long, the influential art centers have been located in major metropolitan regions such as New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Paris, London, Beijing and Seoul. We want to highlight the parts of the world where artists are working.”–William Powhida via Hashtag Class.
Sunset, Miami Beach
Art Basel Miami Beach 2007
I didn’t have to sleep on the beach when I was in Miami, but I didn’t have invites to a lot of the parties, so I spent a lot of time just wandering.
Jason Freeman, Flock (Miami)
Art Basel Miami Beach 2007
Except for attending the world premiere of Jason Freeman’s “Flock,” which I was planning to present at the 2008 01SJ Biennial (http://2008.01sj.org/?p=330)
Marina Zurkow, Bryce Walkowitz Gallery, Pulse Miami
Art Basel Miami Beach 2007
I did, of course, walk through the various fairs. There is always work to like, such as Marina Zurkow’s (and others) at Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery. I commissioned Marina to do Paradoxical Sleep for the 2008 01SJ Biennial (http://2008.01sj.org/?p=270)
Kota Ezawa
Kota Ezawa, Art Basel Miami Beach 2007
I also commissioned 3 new works by Kota Ezawa, $150, New!, and Untitled (http://2008.01sj.org/?p=284).
Sabina Raaf
Art Basel Miami Beach 2007
Apparently, I also saw some of Sabrina Raaf’s work, although I didn’t remember it when I curated a show of her work recently in the gallery@CalIT at UC San Diego (http://tiny.cc/70ke9)
Adams Hotel, Miami Beach
Art Basel Miami Beach 2007
Mostly, however, I just wandered and mostly had a great time.
Adriana Carvalho
Art Basel Miami Beach 2007
One of my favorite shows was in the windows of a Walgreens, I believe. (http://tiny.cc/ptjnt)
Alberto Baraya, Greenhouse
Art Basel Miami Beach 2007
Baraya’s “Greenhouse” was appropriately synthetic (http://tiny.cc/dxx4a).
Jeppe Hein, Modified Social Bench
Art Basel Miami Beach 2007
I fell in love with Hein’s Modified Social Benches (http://tiny.cc/84wa3), which seem to me not unrelated to Angel Borrego Cubero’s Mutant Bridges (http://tiny.cc/30j44) or even Marcus Young’s Everyday Poems for City Sidewalk (http://tiny.cc/fjuun)
We Are Our Own Art History
Art Basel Miami Beach 2007
This sticker seemed a propos and may or may not be related to Loren Munk (http://tiny.cc/x8ruw).
Patrick Mimran, I’m the Best in the West
Art Basel Miami Beach 2007
The difference in scale and sentiment between Munk’s (?) sticker and Mimran’s contrail is surely indicative (http://tiny.cc/8zgyv). Of something.
Susan Philipsz
Art Basel Miami Beach 2007
I can’t recall the exact sound of this installation but Philipsz’ Munster and Governor’s Island installations are still haunting. When will the Walker bring her to Minneapolis?
Art Positions
Art Basel Miami Beach 2007
The containers of Art Positions were not nearly as interesting as the “Container Culture” exhibition I organized and co-curated for the 2006 01SJ Biennial/ISEA Symposium (`http://tiny.cc/2a295). Not to mention eToy’s Mission Eternity (http://tiny.cc/a89sl).
Ryan McGinness, Miami Beach
Art Basel Miami Beach 2007
McGinnehttp://tiny.cc/2vokcss’s installation, however, was amazing (http://tiny.cc/2nr9a)
